Wireless Bravo™ pH Monitoring

Acid Reflux and GERD

Wireless Bravo™ pH monitoring

Most people know that acid reflux isn’t a pleasant feeling. When your stomach acid flows back up into your esophagus, it can cause heartburn, a burning sensation in your chest, often with an accompanying sour taste. It can be a normal, temporary occurrence for many, but if it becomes frequent and chronic, it can be diagnosed as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Wireless Bravo™ pH monitoring is a minimally invasive test used to measure acid levels in your esophagus and diagnose GERD. During an upper endoscopy, a small capsule – about the size of a vitamin pill – is temporarily attached to the lining of your esophagus. Over the course of 48 hours, it records pH levels and transmits the data wirelessly to a small receiver you wear.

This test helps your Mesa GI physician evaluate acid reflux and other symptoms related to GERD and can guide treatment decisions, including lifestyle changes, medications, or further testing. The capsule naturally detaches and passes through your digestive system without the need for removal.

Got Acid Reflux?

Bravo pH monitoring is a patient-friendly test for identifying the presence of acid reflux (GERD) that we can do here at Mesa GI. Information is collected from the capsule over multiple days, which allows the doctor to evaluate reflux symptoms by determining the frequency and duration of acid flowing back up into the esophagus. The test is used to confirm if the patient’s symptoms are indeed caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Bravo pH monitoring is unique because of its catheter-free design. By using a miniature pH capsule attached to the esophagus, pH data from the esophagus can be wirelessly transmitted to a small recorder worn on a shoulder strap or waistband.
